Private hire vehicles
Private Hire vehicles can only be pre-booked. They cannot be hailed in the street and they cannot pick up from a rank. All private hire vehicles must be licensed by us and are subject to a number of requirements to ensure the safety and protection of the public.

Please read the vehicle section of our Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy before submitting an application as it contains important information about the process and our requirements. For example, all vehicles offered for licensing for the first time must be no more than five years old from the date of first registration.
Prior to and while licensed, a vehicle must (amongst other things) pass a vehicle test. These are conducted by one of our authorised garages and in accordance with the vehicle testing document which is Appendix H of the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Policy.
