Council working with local providers to secure affordable homes for local people
Mid Devon District Council has sold land with full planning permission to regional house builder Allison Homes South West and housing association LiveWest to bring 70 affordable new homes to Post Hill, Tiverton.
The new development will be made up of 70, one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom properties, all of which will be classed as affordable, and delivered as a mixture of shared ownership and social rent for local people.
Work on the development started yesterday (04 December 2024), with the first homes being available for occupation in late summer 2025.
Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets & Property commented:
“Following a market process last year, we are delighted to have sold the site to Allison Homes and LiveWest with full planning permission and look forward to the delivery of the 70 affordable homes for local people.”
Steve Fowler, Managing Director of Allison Homes South West, commented on the development:
“The South West is currently facing a shortfall of affordable housing and so, in partnership with LiveWest, we are proud to be providing these 70 affordable homes for the local people of Tiverton.
“We take pride in designing and building high-quality purpose-built homes with the customer in mind. As standard, all our homes are energy efficient meaning lower monthly bills for our customers. Indeed, the new homes will be built to a minimum energy performance rating of B-86.”
Caroline Hughes, Assistant Director – New Business, said:
“We are delighted to have partnered with Allison Homes South West to bring 70 affordable new homes to Tiverton which will be available for local people. The development will also deliver a large area of public open space and a children’s play area and we look forward to seeing the positive impact the development will have on the local community. Details on how to apply for the homes will be released in due course.”
The properties at Post Hill will follow the completion of several council-owned housing schemes in the past five years which include 8 apartments at Shapland Place (2024), 1 two-bed house at Allington Terrace (2024), 6 apartments at St Andrews House (2024), 3 flats at Beech Road (2024), 2 flats at Siddalls Garden (2023), 2 previously void bungalows in Lapford (2021), 6 houses in Burlescombe (2019) and 26 award-winning homes at Turner Rise in Tiverton (2019).
Councillor Clist added:
“Through our housing strategy, we are enabling key sites to come forward for new affordable homes including land in our ownership, working in partnership with other providers who share our goal of addressing the shortage of affordable accommodation.”
The Council is aiming to build circa 500 new council houses by 2028, through a mix of social (50% market rate) and some affordable (80% market rate) homes.
The Council has plans to increase its housing stock further with plans to build 83 council-owned, carbon neutral homes at 13 housing developments across the district. Building work is already underway for a 5 council flats at Crofts Estate in Sandford. The Council has also recently acquired properties at St George’s Court, Tiverton which will be added to Council’s housing stock.
