Damp & Mould Tips for Mid Devon
Mid Devon Housing (MDH) is pleased to announce its participation in Damp and Mould Awareness Week, running from 28 October to 3 November 2024.
This national campaign by Aico aims to raise awareness of the health issues linked to damp and mould, and to encourage tenants and landlords to work together in tackling these problems.
As the colder months set in, cases of damp and mould tend to rise, with October to April being the most critical period. During this time, up to 24 pints of moisture can accumulate in homes daily from everyday activities such as cooking, boiling kettles, and drying clothes. With rising energy costs and increased home draught-proofing, it’s more important than ever to understand how to prevent damp and mould from developing.
In support of the awareness week, MDH will be sharing advice and debunking common myths about damp and mould on Facebook. Tenants will have the opportunity to learn more about the steps MDH’s Repair Operatives and Building Surveyors take to address these issues, along with practical advice they can implement in their own homes.
The highlight of the week will be a special Damp and Mould Demonstration Day on Thursday, 31 October, from 11am to 3pm at Sunningbrook Road Bungalows, Tiverton, EX16 6DY. Tenants are invited to attend this hands-on event, where they will have the opportunity to explore a void property and learn how to best manage their homes to prevent damp and mould.
The demonstration day will feature:
- How to effectively use extractor fans, window vents, thermostats, and water isolation valves.
- Live demonstrations of damp and mould inspections, showcasing equipment such as damp meters, hygrometers, thermal imaging cameras, and cavity wall cameras.
- Opportunities for tenants to conduct their own rising damp ‘salts analysis’ on different materials.
- Free damp and mould packs available to those who need them.
Simon Newcombe, Head of Housing and Health, commented:
"Launching a dedicated Damp and Mould Action and Awareness Week is an excellent initiative that will help sustain the momentum we've built in tackling these critical issues. This week provides a vital platform for promoting best practices and ensuring that no tenant feels unheard or unsupported."
The event is open to all tenants, and those not currently experiencing damp or mould are still encouraged to attend and gain valuable knowledge on prevention methods.
Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets & Property, said:
“We can help equip our tenants with the knowledge and tools to keep their homes safe and healthy. This demonstration day is a great opportunity for tenants to see first-hand how small actions can make a big difference in tackling damp and mould. Understanding the causes of damp and mould is key to prevention, and this event will help empower our community to take proactive steps.”
