Exciting next step for Tiverton’s net zero-carbon housing development
The first modular homes have been delivered and lifted into position as the new housing development takes shape at Shapland Place, Tiverton.
Built in partnership with innovative, modular house builder Zed Pods Ltd, the zero carbon homes have been installed at Shapland Place in Tiverton - a council-owned site which was previously occupied by garages and car parking.
Supporting steel podiums were set in place during September. With foundations and services completed the module installation began on Thursday 14 December, where homes were lowered onto the site using a crane from the adjacent Woodward Road.
Only a few hundred metres from the River Exe and town centre, the development will comprise of eight self-contained residential units, offering a mix of four one-bedroom properties, three two-bedroom properties, and one three-bedroom property to meet varying housing needs. The homes will be completed with triple glazing and solar panels, have their own private communal facilities including internal secured bin stores, a secured cycle store, public landscape gardens, and 37 parking spaces with a number equipped with potential EV charging points.
The modular nature of the homes not only ensures minimal disruption to neighbouring properties but also allows for a quick move-in experience for new residents.
Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Property Services, said:
”Providing affordable, low-carbon, accessible, and adaptable homes is one of the priorities within our housing strategy, and these homes deliver just what we’re looking for. We are committed to providing high quality, social housing for local people, and these projects will help us to meet our ambitious housing plans. These homes will be built using modern construction technology, with little disruption during their construction, which will ensure those who move into them will immediately have a place to call their own as well as benefit from ongoing low energy bills.”
The Council’s commitment to sustainable housing extends beyond Shapland Place, Tiverton, with the first scheme nearing completion at St Andrews Estate, Cullompton. The Council has submitted applications for additional modular housing developments in Willand, Sandford, and more.
Once completed, these properties will be available for local residents to bid on through Devon Home Choice.
