Mid Devon District Council is pleased to announce it has been awarded £671,000 in government funding as part of the Devon and Torbay devolution deal.

This new funding, part of a wider £16 million package, will enable the Council to provide dedicated net-zero carbon accommodation for young care leavers in Mid Devon. The project delivers on the region’s devolution objectives; prioritising housing for young people.

The funding has been put toward four self-contained, one-bed units within the district. These new homes ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for young people as they transition out of the care system.

Mid Devon District Council’s care leaver accommodation programme is one of 16 projects benefitting from this devolution funding. It builds on the Council’s ongoing efforts, in partnership with Devon County Council, to provide secure, long-term housing options for care leavers, reducing the risk of homelessness and encouraging successful integration into the community.

Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Assets & Property, said:

“We are thrilled to receive this funding to provide purpose-built, energy efficient and net-zero homes for young care leavers. This investment will make a real difference in supporting young people in Mid Devon, giving them the resources and stability they need to thrive in our local communities.
“It’s a fantastic example of how devolution funding can drive positive local projects, aligning with our goals for sustainable development and meaningful community support.”

The £671,000 grant for Mid Devon’s care leaver accommodation is part of a broader push to support affordable housing, green jobs, and business growth across the region. The Devon and Torbay devolution deal is designed to accelerate growth by leveraging local expertise.
