On Tuesday, 15 October, three teams from Mid Devon District Council showcased their leadership and problem-solving skills at the South West Challenge, held at Westpoint, Exeter.

The South West Challenge offers aspiring senior managers the chance to step into the shoes of a senior management team, navigating complex real-world issues outside their daily responsibilities. Teams must work together to tackle tasks such as developing strategies, managing limited resources, and delivering high-quality services to the public, all while collaborating with neighbouring organisations.

Competing against numerous organisations from across the South West, one of our teams earned the Leadership Award and was also named runner-up in the 'Best Team' category for Performance—an outstanding accomplishment! In addition, the team was a finalist in the remaining two categories: Best Skills and Communication. With only three finalists shortlisted in each category, being recognised across the board is truly a remarkable achievement!

The council's Chief Executive, Stephen Walford, said:

'The South West Challenge is an excellent opportunity for staff to gain valuable insight and exposure to what it feels like dealing with some of the issues that face the senior management of public organisations during times of pressure, stress or crisis. In competing with councils and other public bodies from across the region, the success of those taking part for Mid Devon is testament to their enthusiasm for development and continued learning, as well as reflecting the depth of talent and ambition within the organisation as a whole.'

This fantastic result highlights the talent and commitment within Mid Devon District Council and their potential to continue leading the way in local government management.
