Mid Devon Leisure has recently converted its pools at Lords Meadow and Exe Valley Leisure Centre’s to a salt-based electro-chlorination system.

The swimming pools upgraded to the new system in August 2024, with the transition forming part of an ongoing commitment to providing a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable swimming experience for customers.

Electro-chlorination is an advanced process that uses ordinary salt (sodium chloride) to chlorinate pool water. A salt chlorine generator converts the salt, killing germs and maintaining a clean, safe environment for swimmers. Unlike traditional chlorine-based systems, this method is more natural and eliminates the need for harsh chemicals.

Salt chlorinated pools have many benefits, outperforming traditional chlorine pools in terms of health, cleanliness, and overall swimming experience. They are better for the environment and gentler on the skin and eyes due to the lower chlorine content. Swimmers will also notice the absence of the strong chemical smell typically associated with chlorine pools. Moreover, saltwater helps maintain the body's natural moisture balance, so you won’t experience a drying-out effect that some experience from chlorine after a swim.

Councillor Josh Wright, Cabinet Member for Service Delivery and Continuous Improvement, said:

“Our upgrades not only provide numerous benefits for swimmers; they also mean that both leisure centres are now powered by 100% renewable electricity which is great news.
“We’re proud to be at the forefront of providing healthier and more environmentally friendly facilities for our customers, continuing with our commitment to sustainability.”
