The trees, which are funded through the Council’s climate and sustainability budget form part of the planned enhancement works for Blundell’s Road. They provide an environmental benefit and follow improved road safety works in the area.

The final tree, a hornbeam, was planted by Councillor Les Cruwys and Councillor Steve Keable on Wednesday 4 December, with officers from Mid Devon District Council and Devon County Council in attendance.

The traffic calming has been implemented to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and all road users between the Tiverton Eastern Urban Extension (EUE) and the town.

The area has seen significant enhancement of the pedestrian footpath and creation of a cycle way on the north side of Blundell’s Road, creating a safer, more welcoming space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Councillor Steven Keable, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration said:

"The completion of this stage of the traffic calming measures, alongside the planting of 9 broadleaf trees, will improve safety for all road users while enhancing the environment. Blundell’s Road is a vital connection into the town centre, and these improvements will make a meaningful difference to everyone who lives, works, and travels here."

The newly opened A361 junction offers an alternative route for traffic from the area east of Tiverton to access the town centre via Blundell’s Road. It is vital to reduce speeds along this section and improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

Tim Jarratt, Arboricultural Officer, said:

“The trees we are planting are a mix of English Oak, Large Leaf Lime, Turkish Hazel, Hornbeam and Liquid Amber. These were chosen for their significant ecological value and biodiversity benefits. The street scene team will continue to provide aftercare to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the newly planted trees.”

This initiative, part of the Mid Devon Local Plan, addresses the impact of the Tiverton Eastern Urban Extension by improving connections between the town centre, the urban extension and the surrounding area, including environmental enhancement.
