We setup a Forum for Gypsies and Travellers, which was approved by our Cabinet on 1 March 2018, and follows the good practice established by the Teignbridge Gypsy and Traveller Forum:

The Forum has since been renamed to include Travelling Showpeople.

The Forum will usually take place twice a year, with meetings in the spring and in the autumn. These meetings are welcome for everyone in the Travelling community, whether Gypsy, Traveller or Travelling Showperson to come along and find out more about planning, housing, and other matters in Mid Devon. We welcome suggestions about things that you would like to hear about – please do get in touch and let us know.

If you have any questions or would like to register your interest in attending Forum meetings, please email GT@middevon.gov.uk

Meeting Housing Needs Supplementary Planning Document

A new planning document, the Meeting Housing Needs Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), was adopted in November 2023. It has been prepared to help deliver new homes to meet the needs of local communities.

The new SPD is broader in scope than the previous version and aims to be more inclusive of the needs of Gypsies and Travellers, Travelling Show People, people with disabilities, and an ageing population.

Mid Devon Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Needs Assessment 2024

A new Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Needs Assessment has been completed for Mid Devon district by consultants Opinion Research Services.

This assessment replaces a previous assessment that was completed in 2015. It identifies the numbers of new pitches for Gypsies and Travellers and new plots for Travelling Showpeople that are needed to provide homes for the travelling community in Mid Devon for the period to 2045.

The assessment provides technical evidence that will be used to inform the preparation of Plan Mid Devon (a new local plan for the district) and it will be capable of being used to guide planning applications submitted to the Council for determination and inform the decisions made on these.
