In late 2024 our external auditors raised a concern about the way the Council calculated its rent charges dating back a number of years.

As a result of this work the Council identified that some of our tenants had been overcharged rent, while some have been undercharged. We wrote to all current tenants, who were affected by the error, to inform them of this issue and to apologise.

Since then our tenants have also received a rent notification letter confirming their corrected rents, which have now been in place since January 2025

Any tenants who were financially affected by the historical errors also received a letter explaining which issue they were affected by (overcharged or undercharged) and we will keep them up to date as we work to rectify the issue and make refunds.

The Council also proactively referred itself to the Regulator for Social Housing and has been engaging with the regulator since then.

We are now identifying any overpayments tenants have made and tenants can read more about the refund process in our FAQs.

Tenants do not need to contact us, we will contact our tenants, but anyone who is worried about rent charges or wishes to speak to a member of our team please email rentcorrections@middevon.gov.uk or call 01884 255255.

Be aware of scams

Refunds will not be made for some months yet and when we start making payments, we will not cold call you to ask you to give payment details such as a bank or building society account number over the phone. The Council will never ask you to make a payment of any amount to receive a refund. If you are in any doubt about a contact made in relation to this issue, please contact your Housing Officer for advice. You should also be vigilant when receiving communications that appear to be from the Department of Work and Pensions.
