Tiverton Celebrates a Successful Swan Trail Auction – A Night of Art, Community and Impact
The highly anticipated Swan Trail Auction was held to an enthusiastic crowd, resulting in every one of the unique swan sculptures finding a cherished home. Hosted by Adam Partridge Auctioneers, the event drew supporters from across Tiverton and beyond, making for a thrilling evening celebrating local art, creativity and community.
Hosted on 7 November at the New Hall, the auction was the grand finale of the beloved ‘The Flock That Rock – Tiverton Swan Trail’, which brought joy to Tiverton throughout the 2024 tourism season. This public art trail, showcasing an array of beautifully crafted swan sculptures designed by local artists, attracted visitors from all over, providing a boost to local businesses and highlighting the artistic talents within our region. Thursday night’s event not only honoured these one-of-a-kind artworks but also underscored the importance of art in strengthening community connections.
The event saw dozens of people attend, hoping to win a swan as well as meet the artists that decorated them and enjoy a display of images about the swan trail’s journey and success. Each swan found a new home with enthusiastic bidders, with artist Stu Barrie drawing the winning raffle ticket for Swanning Around. Funds raised through the auction will support local tourism initiatives and help continue projects that contribute to the cultural and economic vibrancy of Mid Devon. Furthering the legacy of the trail, the swan decorated in traditional ‘roses and castles’ narrowboat-style artwork will remain at the Canal Basin for visitors and locals to continue to treasure.
Cllr Keable Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration states,
“We’re overjoyed by the turnout and support for the project. The swans raised an astonishing £6,710 at auction and additional £494 in the raffle for Swanning Around.
“The Swan Trail has been more than an art installation; it’s been a unifying force for Tiverton, bringing people together and enhancing our town's spirit. Last week’s auction was the perfect celebration of what art, community and local businesses can accomplish together.”
Zoë Lentell, Economic Development Team Leader added:
“Part-funded through the Shared Prosperity Fund and part from Mid Devon District Council, the purpose of the swan trail was to raise awareness of Tiverton, its abundance of fantastic independent businesses and encourage residents and visitors alike to spend time in each of the retail quarters.
The Swan Trail has had a tangible impact on the local economy, driving increased footfall to the town centre (an increase of 12% or 561,000 between April – October compared to the same months last year), and spotlighting 67 local businesses and organisations through Swanning Around’s adventures. From families to art enthusiasts, the trail has brought people from all walks of life to explore the art-filled streets, enjoy food at local eateries, and shop with local retailers.”
The Council extended a special thank you to Adam Partridge Auctioneers for hosting the event as well as to everyone who has been part of the Swan Trail journey – from artists, hosts and organisers, visitors and bidders – for their support in making this trail a resounding success.
