Zero-Carbon Homes Shortlisted for Second Consecutive Year
After picking up an award for its Cullompton development, the Councils planned modular housing development in Tiverton has been shortlisted for five awards in the South West’s Construction Excellence Awards.
Built in partnership with innovative, modular house builder Zed Pods Ltd, the zero operational carbon homes are set to be installed on a council-owned site in Shapland Place, Tiverton.
The approved plans will provide a mixture of housing types, including 4 one bed, 3 two bed and 1 three bedroom homes, with an additional 29 car parking spaces. The homes will be completed with triple glazing and solar panels, have their own private communal green space as well as separate storage for residents’ bins and bicycles.
The development in Flood Zone area is set to be zero operational carbon, making this one of the first social housing projects of this type within the district and in the country and has been shortlisted in the following five categories:
- MMC Award (Modern Methods of Construction)
- Sustainability Award
- Net Zero Award
- Residential Property of the Year
In addition, the Council has been chosen as a finalist in the “Client of the Year” award category – a great recognition for its commitment to build social housing schemes using offsite construction.
Councillor Simon Clist, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Property Services, said:
“Transforming our council-owned sites into affordable, low carbon homes that help towards our climate agenda is a huge boost for the area and it’s great that we have received recognition for this through this shortlist.”
The awards are being run by Constructing Excellence South West which forms part of the Constructing Excellence Regional Partnership (CERP) and exists to improve industry performance in order to produce a better built environment.
Thomas Northway, Chairman for Zed Pods said:
“Unlocking brownfield sites in Flood Zones is at the forefront of innovative design which is delivered by our in-house team. It’s great to work with forward thinking councils like MDDC to build zero-carbon, social rented housing schemes.
"We are delighted to be recognised for the work we have done by working closely with the council and look forward in handing over new homes to the people of the borough by this financial year.”
The next stage of the awards will be a presentation to the judges next month before the final winners are announced on Thursday 20 July 2023.
