Hackney carriages

Hackney Carriages (also known as taxis) can carry passengers who have hailed them in the street and can also pick up from a rank. They can also be pre-booked.  All Hackney Carriages must be licensed by us and are subject to a number of requirements to ensure the safety and protection of the public

Private hire vehicles

Private Hire vehicles can only be pre-booked. They cannot be hailed in the street and they cannot pick up from a rank. All private hire vehicles must be licensed by us and are subject to a number of requirements to ensure the safety and protection of the public.

Vehicle requirements

For the safety and comfort of passengers, the Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Policy details conditions and specifications that vehicles must meet prior to being licenced as either a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Vehicle. Appendix 4 of the policy covers vehicle requirements in detail.

Your vehicle will need to be presented to the Licensing officers for an inspection prior to licence and will need to pass a vehicle test carried out at one of our approved garages.

Your vehicle will need to meet current Ultra Low Emissions Standards (ULEZ) emissions standards, ULEZ compliance can be checked on the Transport for London website Ultra Low Emission Zone - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)

• Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle application form (to be completed in addition to either the HC or PHV application forms).
